DomainKeys Identified Mail, or DKIM, is a system for validating the legitimacy of an email message using a digital signature. When DKIM is activated for a specific domain name, a public key is published to the global Domain Name System and a private one is kept on the email server. When a new message is sent, a signature is generated using the private key and when the email message is delivered, that signature is validated by the POP3/IMAP email server using the public key. In this way, the recipient can easily know if the email is genuine or if the sender’s email address has been forged. A mismatch will occur if the content of the email message has been edited on its way as well, so DomainKeys Identified Mail can also be used to make sure that the sent and the received emails are identical and that nothing has been attached or erased. This email validation system will increase your email security, since you can verify the legitimacy of the important emails that you receive and your partners can do the exact same thing with the emails that you send them. Based on the particular email service provider’s adopted policy, an email message that fails to pass the test may be deleted or may appear in the receiver’s inbox with a warning flag.

DomainKeys Identified Mail in Cloud Hosting

If you host a domain in a cloud hosting account from our company, all the needed records for using the DomainKeys Identified Mail functionality will be added by default. This will happen as soon as you add the domain name in the Control Panel’s Hosted Domains section, on the condition that the domain also uses our NS records. A private cryptographic key will be generated on our mail servers, whereas a public key will be published to the global DNS database automatically using the TXT resource record. In this way, you won’t need to do anything manually and you will be able to enjoy all the benefits of this email authentication system – your emails will reach any target audience without being discarded and no one will be able to send out messages forging your addresses. The latter is quite important in case the type of your web presence involves sending out periodic offers or newsletters via email to prospective and current clients.
